This textbook has been designed to meet the needs of B.Sc. First Semester Core IV students of Zoology for all Odisha State Universities and Colleges under the recommended National Education Policy 2020. It comprehensively covers theory and practical papers, namely, Cell Biology. The theory part introduces the fundamental concepts of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, highlighting their features, the ultrastructure of the plasma membrane and how molecules are transported across it. It covers the structure, function and properties of the endomembrane system, cytoskeletal network, and cell organelles. The importance of mitochondria in aerobic organisms is examined, focusing on the mitochondrial electron transport chain, oxidative phosphorylation and the mechanism of ATP synthesis. Additionally, the section explores the structure and packaging of chromosomes within the nucleus, their behaviour during cell division and the regulation of the cell cycle. Relevant experiments corresponding to the theoretical topics and examples have been presented systematically to help students achieve sound conceptual understanding and learn experimental procedures.

  • More than 100 well-labelled diagrams have been provided for easy understanding of the concepts
  • Boxed items throughout the text providing information on intricate terms and topics
  • Engaging chapter-end exercises have been provided for practice
  • Collection of experiments to stimulate interest and aid in learning and memorising the practical aspect of the subject
