He was Director and Professor of Finance and Accounting at the Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad. Earlier, he was Principal, Shri Ram College of Commerce, University of Delhi. He was educated at St. John's College, Agra, from where he obtained a Doctorate of Economics. As a Ford Foundation Fellow, he participated in a one-year seminar on Financial Management at the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University. Dr. Gupta was the president of the All India Commerce Association in 1971 and was a member of the All India Board of Technical Studies in Commerce from 1973 to 1975.
